Security has always involved a trade-off: the measures that protect us are often the same measures that slow us down.
The statement that “convenience is the opposite of security” is deliberately provocative. It is not literally true, many technologies have made our lives both easier and safer. Yet, as a broader principle, convenience and security often pull in opposite directions.
Convenience is built around removing barriers. Modern technology celebrates the seamless experience; the fewer clicks, fewer queues, and fewer decisions, the better.
The question is which forms of friction are worth preserving, and what happens when we remove them without understanding the role they play?
Friction Is a Feature, Not a Bug
Friction is often viewed as a design problem because it introduces effort, delay, or additional steps. However, in security, those same characteristics serve an important purpose.
An additional verification step, approval process, or identity check may appear inefficient from a convenience perspective, but it can also be the point where fraud is prevented, unusual behaviour is detected, or a costly mistake is interrupted.
In security, friction is not a design flaw, it is a control.
The Psychology of Friction: Interrupting Autopilot
Human beings naturally gravitate towards simplicity. We prefer processes that require less effort, fewer decisions, and less cognitive attention. This is why seamless experiences feel natural and intuitive.
However, removing friction does more than make tasks faster; it changes how we think.
Psychologists often distinguish between two modes of thinking: a fast, intuitive mode that operates almost automatically, and a slower, more deliberate mode that requires conscious effort. Most routine tasks rely on the former, allowing us to move efficiently through everyday life.
Security often seeks to interrupt automatic behaviour. Entering a password, confirming a payment, or verifying an identity introduces a brief pause that encourages deliberate thought before an action is completed. That pause creates an opportunity to notice something unusual, reconsider a decision, or detect a potential mistake.
Biometric authentication illustrates the opposite effect. Face ID and other forms of passwordless authentication can improve security by reducing reliance on weak passwords, yet they also make authentication almost effortless. As the process becomes more seamless, users become less consciously engaged with the act of authentication itself.
Psychologists describe a related phenomenon as automation bias, the tendency to place increasing trust in automated systems while becoming less engaged in monitoring or questioning them.
Have We Become Biased Against Friction?
Perhaps the most interesting question is cultural. Modern society has increasingly learned to measure quality through speed, convenience, and ease of use. A slow website is often perceived as poorly designed, a lengthy checkout process as inefficient, a queue as a failure of service, and a manual process as outdated.
This preference for seamlessness has shaped how we judge good design. Yet security introduces a different consideration: sometimes the elements that feel inconvenient are the same elements that create assurance.
The best technology often disappears into the background. The best security often makes itself visible.
A successful security process may be one that people notice precisely because it asks something of them.
Friction as Governance: How Societies Manage Trust
Beyond individual security measures, friction is one of the ways societies manage trust.Every system creates decisions about access: who can enter, who must wait, who requires verification, and who receives immediate approval. Borders create friction through visas, immigration controls, and security screening. Buildings create friction through access cards and visitor procedures. Financial systems create friction through identity verification and transaction approvals.
These are not simply obstacles; they represent decisions about trust and risk. When trust is high, friction decreases, and when uncertainty increases, friction increases.
Friction is the process through which societies convert uncertainty into rules, controls, and decisions.
